Playing the drums has quite literally helped define the person that I am. It sounds like a cliché, but it is true. All of my most valued friendships, memorable journeys, and greatest achievements can be traced back to the drum-set. Playing the drums has taken me around the world, and introduced me to cultures and ways of life that I might otherwise have not seen.
From the Savoy Hotel in London, the beautiful Splendour of the Seas luxury cruise liner, and the world renowned University of Cambridge to the showcase stages of London and Los Angeles, and even the nightclubs of Calcutta India; I have played in a variety of venues, in differing styles of music, in different types of bands. It's not all glamour though. On the flip side, I have played at many of industrial England's Working Men's Clubs, transportation ships in force ten gales, and even on the back of double decker buses. I wouldn't change any of this for the world, and have always gained a meaningful musical experience in all of these situations. I have played on independent album releases in both the UK and the USA, and have also worked in radio and television, most recently contributing drum parts for the CBS television production of Star Search in 2005. It is a truly great feeling hearing your drum parts played on national television, to an audience of millions. But it doesn't matter if you are being heard by millions or playing before a small gathering in a bar - the performance level must always be of the highest standard. You owe it to yourself, and your audience.
In my various guises within the Drum World, I have managed one the largest drum departments in the world at the Guitar Center in Hollywood California, one of the largest dedicated drum businesses in Europe, and I have even dabbled at writing for the drum magazines. During this time, I scored my first front page feature with an interview of Matt Sorum (Velvet Revolver) for Drummer Magazine in 2004, and a respectable placing for my Mylious Johnson (Pink) interview in the same magazine, that same year. I have also been very fortunate to work as an Event Co-ordinator within the drumming industry, and have organised clinics in the UK for some legendary players - check out my influence page for a list of all of the drummers I have worked with in organising clinics. I moved to the USA in 2007, and have built up an extensive list of clients for teaching, recording and performance. In 2008, I played on various studio recordings for local artists, performed live extensively throughout San Diego, Los Angeles and Denver, and made several television appearances. I currently work with Award Winning songwriter Veronica May, who last year, was voted “Best Acoustic Act” in the coveted San Diego Music Awards. Previous winners have included Jewel, and Jason Mraz. |
